Birthday Trophy Blue Catfish: 30lb Catch with Goober Time Guide Service
Updated: 8 hours ago
There is no better way to celebrate a birthday than with bent rods, heavy current, and trophy blue catfish. Courtnei surprised her boyfriend, Kevin, for his birthday with a morning trip on the river alongside her son, Kaiden. With an early 7:00 AM kickoff, we set out to make it a memorable four-hour run on the water.
Our morning started by pulling the gill net to stock up on fresh gizzard shad for bait. Fresh, bait is key when targeting river catfish, and having a solid haul in the cooler gave us complete confidence heading into our first set.

Working the Ledge & Finding the Bite
We navigated the boat out to a channel ledge featuring a deep drop-off. To cover the full water column across different feeding zones, we deployed six Hellcat Revenge rods paired with Slime Line and secured in SmackDown Rod Holders:
Channel Bottom: 2 rods set right in the bottom of the deep channel ledge.
The Drop-Off: 2 rods positioned right on the sloping drop-off.
Mud Flat: 2 rods set shallow on the mud flat above the drop-off.
Using our Goober Time Guide Service 2-in-1 Rigs, it didn't take long before the rod tips started dipping, putting our first few eater-sized blue catfish in the boat.
Welcoming Kevin to the Trophy Club
While we landed a few early fish, the action wasn't quite on fire, so we packed up and shifted to a new location. We had marked a cluster of fish on the electronics—including one distinctly large silhouette hiding amongst them.
Within five minutes of anchoring, a rod doubled over and screamed down river, pulling heavy drag. Kevin jumped on the rod and went straight to battle with a powerful blue cat throwing heavy head shakes all the way to the gunwale.

Once netting the fish, we put the tape and scale to it: 40 inches and 30 pounds!

A true trophy blue and an incredible way to mark a birthday on the water. Welcome to the trophy club.

Final Moves & Catfish Nuggets
Following the trophy catch, we made a minor adjustment to fish heavy current in search of more table fare. Kevin, a professional cook, was eager to take home some fresh catfish nuggets. The river delivered right on cue, adding a few more solid eater-sized fish to the cooler.
Time flies fast on the river, and before long we made our final move of the four-hour trip. We capped off the morning with a few last eater fish before reeling in the spread and heading back to the dock.
