There is no better way to celebrate a milestone than on the water, and recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Dean and his family for a special multispecies fishing trip on Chickahominy Lake. The occasion? His grandson’s 10th birthday!
At Goober Time Guide Service, we love introducing the next generation of anglers to the incredible diversity of the Chickahominy. Our goal for the day was simple: catch as many different species as possible and keep the rods bending.
Trolling and Long Lining for Early Success
We kicked off the morning by long lining and trolling to cover water and gauge the bite. The strategy paid off quickly as we landed a mix of:
White Perch
Crappie (including a few "slabs" that put up a great fight!)

As the morning bite quieted down, we decided to shift gears and change scenery.
Exploring the Creeks: Bass and Panfish
Moving into the creeks proved to be the right call. The family started pulling in Largemouth Bass and some beautiful, hard-hitting Shellcracker.
We kept the momentum going by moving across the lake, where the variety continued to impress. The tally grew with more Bluegill, White Perch, and Crappie. We even had a heart-pounding moment with a Chain Pickerel that unfortunately broke off right at the net, and a feisty Largemouth that showed off its acrobatics by jumping and spitting the jig!

Closing Out a Full Day on the Water
After hitting a few more productive spots in the creeks to round out the catch with more Shellcracker and Perch, we headed back to the docks. The final species count for the day was impressive:
White Perch
Crappie
Bluegill
Shellcracker
Largemouth Bass
Yellow Perch
Chain Pickerel (The one that got away!)

From the Lake to the Frying Pan
We wrapped up the birthday celebration by cleaning the catch, sending Dean and his family home with fresh fillets ready for the grease. Nothing beats a family fish fry to cap off a successful day on the lake!
