Summer fishing patterns are officially locking into place, bringing exceptional multi-species action for anglers looking to stock up the freezer. On June 1, Goober Time Guide Service had the absolute pleasure of hosting Jose, Osmar, Tucker, and Cesar for an action-packed, four-hour morning charter from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
This crew was out on the water celebrating a well-deserved company prize. With clear skies and summer weather settling in, their primary mission for the day was straightforward and timeless: catch plenty of high-quality fish to take home for an epic family fish fry. Nature and the local fishery certainly obliged, delivering an incredible numbers day with a steady stream of fish to fill the cooler.
Early Morning Trolling & Long Lining Tactics
We kicked off the morning at 6:30 AM, scanning structural breaks and marking significant schools of fish holding along the flats. The water temperature hovered between a warm 75°F and 77°F, pushing the active schools into transition zones. To maximize our coverage, we deployed a highly efficient multi-species spread, long lining delicate crappie jigs alongside a series of diving crankbaits in somewhat shallow water.
The presentation was an instant success. Our guests quickly found their rhythm as a hungry school of crappie dialed into the jigs. We put three consecutive crappie in the cooler in short order, setting an exciting pace for the morning. Just as the crappie bite slowed momentarily, a heavy, dragging strike hammered a deeper running crankbait. Jose took the rod and, after a fun back-and-forth battle, landed a beautiful channel catfish—adding excellent variety and prime meat to our mounting harvest.
High-Performance Gear Breakdown
Running an efficient multi-rod trolling spread requires specialized equipment that can handle multiple species simultaneously. For this trip, we relied exclusively on Catch the Fever (Precision Cast Rods). These rods offer the perfect blend of a sensitive tip to detect subtle crappie bites and a powerful backbone to control larger predators when they surprise you on the troll.
Our Precision Cast Rods were spooled with high-visibility Slime Line, providing exceptional line tracking and shock absorption. The entire setup was locked securely into our ultra-durable SmackDown Rod Holders, ensuring seamless hands-free trolling until the rods doubled over. In order to cover a variety of water depths, we used Arkie 220 and Rebel 300 crankbaits.
Navigating Changing Conditions and Deep-Water Shifts
As the morning progressed, the shallow water bite remained active but volatile. A feisty largemouth bass slammed a crankbait and put on a spectacular aerial display before unfortunately breaking off. The crew shook it off immediately as the crappie school moved back in. We quickly boated another crappie, followed by our first white perch of the day. The action then exploded into a furious crappie rally, highlighted by three more single catches and a thrilling "double up" where two fish were brought over the gunwale at the exact same time. Two more crappie soon followed, completing an incredibly productive early-morning run.
By mid-morning, we had trolled pretty far up lake and noticed the water was stained from heavy rainfall the previous week. Recognizing the shift, we adapted our strategy and crossed to the opposite side of the lake in search of cleaner water and more stable conditions. Almost immediately after resetting our SmackDown Rod Holders, a massive fish hammered the line, tearing off drag and showcasing incredible power before breaking off.
Undeterred, the team kept lines in the water. The move paid off handsomely, yielding another nice crappie followed by a rapid-fire triple on fat white perch. We capped off the four-hour adventure with an incredible flurry of late-morning action, landing another crappie, a hard-hitting largemouth bass, one final crappie, and a second quality largemouth bass right before lines out at 10:30 AM.
