We filled the Boat with Blue Catfish

We had Kyle, Bradley, and Jakob out to celebrate a birthday party. We started the evening off trolling for striper. We marked fish up and down the river for well over an hour, but only caught one.

We decided it was time to change gears and start catfish but first we had to catch some fresh bait. We showed the guys how to run a gill net and trolled for striper for another couple minutes while the gill net set. We pulled the net and had enough bait to fish for a couple hours. The bait of choice was gizzard Shad.

We started drifting down the river and things were quiet for the first 10 minutes, but then we started to pick up fish. We’d catch one eater size fish.

Drift for a little. Catch another eater size fish.

We repeated that pattern for about 40 minutes.

We saw a lot of activity in the mud flats, so we anchored up and cast rods along a channel up into the mud flats. It was musical rods with rods getting tapped sometimes three or four at a time. About 10 minutes into the anchor our first fish came in the boat a nice eater size catfish.

This spot produced a number of fish all in the eater size range. We weren’t expecting any big fish since the trophy cars are on spawn and we’re leaving them alone.

We caught a number of fish in this spot but soon the bite started to die off and we wanted to try our chance of something a little bigger so we moved locations.

We caught a couple more fish in the next spot. Bringing our total up to a little over 15 fish for the evening.

Aside from the striper fishing, the bite was pretty steady the entire four hours. We hope you enjoyed your time on the water and hope to see you again soon. Happy birthday.
