Summer Multi-Species Action: Lake Chesdin Fishing Report (July 21, 2026)

Summer in Central Virginia can present some challenging conditions, and putting together a solid catch requires adaptability, patience, and persistence. On July 21, 2026, Goober Time Guide Service welcomed Keith and his 12-year-old son, Colin, visiting us from Mechanicsville, VA, for a morning multi-species charter on Lake Chesdin (7:00 AM – 11:00 AM). With Colin being an enthusiastic young angler eager to sharpen his skills and learn how to work through unpredictable summer patterns, our main goal was to share techniques, stay focused, and put together a fun trip catching whatever we could tempt into biting.
Working Hard & Staying Adaptable in Tough Conditions
Water temperatures were sitting warm at 84°F to 85°F, and right out of the gate, it was clear we were going to have to work hard for every strike. We geared up with our go-to multi-species setup: Precision Cast Rods from Catch the Fever paired with high-visibility Slime Line and locked into our SmackDown Rod Holders, trolling classic Bandit 300 crankbaits.
We started our morning trolling steep drop-offs above the lake’s thermocline, but that initial stretch proved quiet. Rather than sticking with a dead pattern, we adjusted our approach and moved into 10 to 15 feet of water near submerged foliage. The extra effort paid off, breaking the silence as two crappie hit in quick succession.
Finding the Pattern & Bay Action
Recognizing that speed and location were key, we bumped up our trolling speed slightly. The faster presentation triggered a reactive strike from an aggressive largemouth bass, proving that the fish were actively hunting along the vegetation edges.
To maximize our time on active fish, we identified a promising bay with abundant bait activity and began working it systematically back and forth. The bay proved to be a multi-species hotspot. First came a beautiful 12-inch crappie, followed shortly by another slab crappie and our first hard-fighting channel catfish of the morning.
Colin and Keith stayed sharp at the rod holders, taking advantage of the active window. In quick order, we brought aboard two more crappie, a pair of white perch, and a hard-fighting largemouth bass. As the bite began to settle back down into another slow patch, we kept working the area methodically, picking up one last crappie, a big white perch, a third largemouth bass, another crappie, and a final channel catfish to cap off the morning.
While the bite was undeniably tough and demanded constant effort, staying versatile turned a slow start into a very rewarding morning. In total, Keith and Colin landed 16 fish across four species, showing that hard work and the right adjustments on the water always pay off!
