The spring bite is officially in high gear! We recently hit Chickahominy Lake for a few hours of action, and let’s just say the fish were more than happy to cooperate. With rising water temps and clear skies, the lake is alive and offering some of the best multi-species fishing we've seen all season.
At Goober Time Guide Service, we pride ourselves on putting fish in the boat, and this trip was a prime example of how versatility pays off. Here is the breakdown of our latest successful outing.
Conditions & Transitions
We started the morning with crisp 68-degree air, which quickly warmed up to a high of 90 degrees under bright, sunny skies. The water temperature followed suit, starting at a comfortable 72°F and climbing to 76°F by the afternoon.

This warming trend pushed the fish into a high-activity feeding mode, particularly in the creeks and near the weed edges.
The Game Plan: Creek Hopping & Trolling
We kicked things off by trolling crankbaits in the primary creeks. This is a fantastic way to cover water and see who’s home. Early on, we boated a mix of white perch, bluegill, largemouth bass, and our first few crappies of the day.

Shifting Gears to Long Lining
As the sun got higher, we moved to a second creek and switched tactics to long lining crappie jigs. This finesse approach proved irresistible to a wider variety of predators. We added several more crappie to the cooler, along with aggressive chain pickerel, yellow perch, and more largemouth bass.

The "Big Slab" Run
Moving up-lake to troll near the weed edges was the turning point for the "slabs." We hammered a consistent run of 11–14 inch crappie. These fish were hanging tight to the vegetation, waiting for a meal to pass by. We finished the day circling back to our first spot, where we rounded out the catch with some beautiful shellcracker and even more keeper-sized crappie.

The Tale of the Tape: Final Count
It was a "numbers" kind of day. We didn't just find one school; we found seven different species that were ready to play.
Species | Count |
Crappie | 18 (16 Keepers/Eaters) |
White Perch | 8 |
Bluegill | 5 |
Largemouth Bass | 5 |
Shellcracker | 3 |
Chain Pickerel | 2 |
Yellow Perch | 1 |
Total Fish | 42 |
Total Species | 7 |
