Kinta and Xavier joined Goober Time Guide Service on the James River for our final trophy catfishing trip of 2025. We started the morning blasting downriver to fish channel ledges with fresh gizzard shad, looking for those deep-water blues.

We weren't anchored up long when the first rod slammed. Since we were fishing in 40 feet of water, we took our time bringing the fish to the surface to ensure a safe release. We started the morning with a solid James River blue catfish weighing around 10 lbs.

Searching for the Bite
The bite was steady, but the hookups were tricky. We had one massive takedown that got the whole boat excited, but unfortunately, the fish broke the line and took the rig with it. Based on the pull, it was definitely a fish we would have liked to take a picture with.
We scanned several more ledges but had trouble marking a consistent school. We moved to some structure that has been producing lately, but the fish weren't interested in biting. We even tucked into some "hot water" discharge areas; while the fish were feeding like crazy, they were mostly smaller blues that couldn't quite commit to our larger trophy baits. We pulled one 5 lb fish before deciding to make a big move.

Trolling Planer Boards for Giants
We headed back upriver to change tactics and started pulling planer boards. We marked plenty of big fish, but they were being stubborn and wouldn't eat. We stayed patient and kept the boards dragging until a giant James River catfish finally hooked up.
The planer board sank instantly, and line started peeling across the water! The fish hit an outside board on the port side and charged toward the starboard. We frantically cleared the other lines to avoid a tangle, and then the real fight was on.

A 50 lb James River Trophy
Xavier fought the fish like a pro, battling as it repeatedly tried to dive and sink the board. Finally, we were able to scoop it up—a massive 50 lb trophy blue catfish!

What a way to wrap up the year. Xavier was already a member of our Goober Time Trophy Club, but he just added another impressive "giant" to his resume.
