Catching Huge Catfish in Raging Waters!

Writer: Dan SzajtaDan Szajta

Stan and I ran a guide trip Sunday morning and wanted to check in on some high water locations. We had leftover bait from the guide trip and the weather was unseasonably high for a February afternoon so we pulled the boat out of the river and launched ina new location. The water was so high we had to get creative launching the boat as the ramp was completely underwater.

We

We launched safely and slowly made our way up river, careful to watch out for any debris floating down river,  a common occurrence when the river floods. We made it to our first location and tossed the rods out. Almost immediately, a spinning reel started to scream drag and two other rods went down next to it. We reeled down on all 3 and only the spinning rod hooked up.

The fish used the current to give us one heck of a battle and eventually hit the deck, weighing about 25 lbs.

We tried to sit down on the pontoon benches and relax but the rods started going down again. We had a series of big, drag pulling runs, but we were a little too comfortable on the benches and not on our A game, missing some of the take downs. We had a series of huge take downs that broke off on rock piles, especially the braided line on the spinning reels. After retying rigs and getting some more bai tout, we hooked up with our nicest fish of the day, weighing just over 40 lbs.

The spinning reels were on fire! We were tired from an early morning on the water for the guide trip and had some wiring to do on the boat so we stuck around to catch one more fish before heading to the ramp. We met a bank angler and he helped us release our fish at the ramp.

Not a bad way to wrap up a great day on the water. We left them biting and returned all the big fish back to the river so you can come catch them on your guide trip.
