Monster Crappie are on be Beds

Stan and I went on a scouting mission to a lake for an upcoming crappie guide trip. We were disappointed to find that the bait shop was out of minnows. Luckily, we brought some worms and started the morning off fishing a pile of fish with slip floats. The bite was pretty slow and we only caught two crappie out of the school so we started to move through a creek.

We were long lining crappie jigs behind the boat and started to get on fish right away. The further we went back into the creek, the slower the bite. We marked a giant school of fish and started to fish them with slip bobbers without any luck. Minnows would’ve tore them up.

We kept changing out jigs until we found a combination they really liked, which turned out to be a roadrunners with a blade. We had gone through this creek and back and it was time to try another creek. With a couple of fish in the boat, we realize the pattern was on the underspin baits and a little bit flashier presentation so we tied a couple crankbaits on in addition to our jigs.

The mixture of crankbaits and jigs were a huge success, and we started to put fish after fish in the boat. The crappie were getting bigger and we were starting to mix in some other species, such as white perch, yellow perch, bluegill, and catfish. As we dialed in on the pattern, we started to catch big crappie more regularly and even came across a nice bass and chain pickerel.

We only spent a couple hours on the lake but finish the day up with a nice collection of fish for the dinner table.
